The Trapp Block is valued as a landmark structure on Columbia Street, the city's earliest, most historic area of commercial and institutional buildings. Much of the distinctive architecture along Columbia Street dates from between 1898 and 1913. It's when New Westminster was the major commercial and industrial centre for the booming Fraser Valley area, and served the agricultural, fishing and lumbering sectors of the economy. The redevelopment of the Trapp Block aspires to reconnect with the pride and vision of New Westminster's early years.
The Trapp Block is historically significant for its association with the wholesale and
retail hardware firm of T.J. Trapp and Co. Ltd., founded by Thomas and Samuel Trapp in New Westminster in 1880, which by 1914 was one of the largest such firms in Western Canada. The earliest part of the present structure was a four-storey section completed in 1902 as a satellite warehouse to Trapp's main retail store across the street.
The Trapp Block redevelopment will reinstate the open, welcoming glazed storefronts that bring so much life to the street. With a mix of restaurant, retail, and café, the Trapp Block will again become the centre of activity on Columbia Street, anchoring the growing community.
