Photos: Salient’s Gastown retail occupants and the future of Columbia Street

Trapp + Holbrook neighbourhood

In our last blog post, we told you about an initiative to get the community’s input about the future of downtown New West.  Through a partnership with Vancity Buzz, we’re geting input from the community, and we’re thrilled to see feedback from journalists, politicians, and homebuyers, but most especially from current New West residents.

We also shared our philosophy about selecting businesses for our retail spaces. From our history working in urban communities, we realize the importance of retail in creating neighbourhoods with a story and a unique pulse.  For New West, we’re looking to connect with businesses and groups who will work with us to build vibrant communities, much like what we have done in Gastown.

To give you more ideas on what we’re looking for, we would like to showcase some of our current Gastown retail space occupants and why we love them.  Here are some of the businesses that we have welcomed:

Orling & Wu - Gastown

Exclusive home decor lifestyle store Orling & Wu specializes on European-inspired fabrics and home objects.

Haven - Gastown

Oak + Fort - Gastown

Roden Gray - Gastown

Gastown was recently named the fourth most stylish neighbourhood in the world, and independent clothing shops in the area such as Oak + Fort, Roden Gray, and Haven have something to do with that.

Meat & Bread - Gastown

Meat & Bread is a popular lunchtime spot for young professionals working in the area.

Acme Café - Gastown

Family-owned Acme Café is known for its brunch menu and decadent desserts.

Boneta - Gastown

Boneta - Gastown

Beloved by foodies, Boneta is known for serving “beautiful food”.

The future of Columbia Street — It’s not too late for your input

Although New West and Gastown are distinct communities, we believe that they share similarities in history and energy. We’re keen to hear how you envision the future of the Royal City.

What do you want to see on the emerging Columbia Street and in the Trapp+Holbrook retail space?
